WORKSHOP

Kintsugi – A Time Filled with Richness

In an age where convenience is everywhere, there must be some reason why we feel the need to take the time and effort to repair things using lacquer. Kintsugi, once simply a method for repairing broken items, has now come to hold deeper meanings. In these hectic times, I hope that the time spent slowly and carefully on kintsugi becomes a rich and fulfilling experience for you.

Kintsugi is the art of repairing broken or chipped ceramics and porcelain using natural lacquer.

Capacity: 6 participants
Participation Fee: 49,000 yen (for 7 sessions, can be paid in two installments, materials included, gold powder cost not included)

  • In this workshop, you can repair one broken item and 1-2 chipped or cracked items using kintsugi.
  • For chipped or cracked items, we will start from the foundation work.
  • If you do not have any broken items to bring, we can provide items from the kintsugi workshop for you to work on. Please inform us when you make your reservation if you need this option. (An additional fee will be charged for the workshop’s items.)

DATE

The entire process will be completed in 7 sessions.

We will use a different type of gold powder to finish one small chipped area.

April 12th (Friday)
Adhesion
We will assess the best way to repair the item you have brought, and prepare the broken parts. Then, we will adhere the pieces using lacquer.

April 26th (Friday)
Foundation Work
We will create a foundation using lacquer mixed with mountain soil.

May 10th (Friday)
Smoothing the Foundation
Once the foundation has dried, we will shape it using a knife or sandpaper. Afterward, we will apply another layer of lacquer to refine the shape.

May 31st (Friday)
Smoothing and Applying Black Lacquer
We will smooth the lacquered areas with sandpaper and apply black lacquer. This layer serves as waterproofing, so it needs to completely cover the foundation lacquer.

June 14th (Friday)
Final Coating
We will smooth the black lacquer with sandpaper and apply a final coat. The lacquer will be applied evenly to create a smooth surface.

June 28th (Friday)
Applying Gold Powder
We will apply decorative lacquer over the black lacquer and sprinkle gold powder. You are welcome to paint any design you like on the black lacquered areas.

July 12th (Friday)
Securing the Gold Powder
The dried gold will be coated with raw lacquer and left to dry for about a week to complete the piece.
