WORKSHOP

Kintsugi A fulfilling and Enriching Time

In this age where we are surrounded by convenience, there must be a reason why people still choose to take the time and effort to repaie something using lacquer. Kintsugi was originally just a method for repairing broken items so they could be used again. However, today, it has come to hold deeper meaning. In our fast-paced lives, kintsugi is a orocess that can only be done slowly and carefully. I hope that this timespent on kintsugi will be a rich and fulfilling experience.

Kintaugi is a traditional technique for repairing broken or chipped pottery and porcelain using natural lacquer.

DATE

The entire process takes place over seven sessions.
One small chip will be repaired using a different type of gold powder.

_Friday, April 11
We will assess the best repair method for your vessel and prepare the broken pieces. Then, we will join them using lacquer.

_Friday, April 25
We will create a base layer using sabi-urushi, a mixture of lacquer and fine mountain soil.

_Friday, May 9
Once the sabi-urushi has dried, we will shape it using a knife or file. Then, we will apply another layer of sabi-urushi
to refine the shape.

_Friday, May 23
We will further smooth the sabi-urushi with a file and apply black lacquer.
This layer serves as waterproofing, so it must fully cover the base.

_Friday, June 13
We will refine the black lacquer with a file and apply a topcoat. The lacquer will be evenly applied to create a smooth,
polished finish.

_Friday, June 27
A layer of decorative lacquer will be applied over the black lacquer, and gold powder will be sprinkled on top.
You may also paint your own design over the black lacquer if you wish.

_Friday, July 11
The gold layer will be sealed with raw lacquer and left to dry for about a week to complete the piece.
